  For many years I worked as a sourcing specialist for an engineering and manufacturing company.  I spent forty hours a week scouring the Internet for suppliers and services, plus researching competitors and gathering information on legal issues.

 

In the course of my Internet data gathering, I visited thousands of search engine pages.  Many of the Web sites I was seeking were buried deep in the search results.  I wondered why the sites with the right content were so hard to find.  When I began studying Web site design, I discovered it was because their sites were not built with effective search engine optimization (SEO) tools. Using SEO techniques, a designer can help make a Web site appear in the top results.

  I also became aware of the frustration a potential customer has when entering a site that loads slowly or is hard to navigate.  Fancy graphics and animations are wonderful, as long as they aren't driving people away with long load times.  Being able to easily find one's way around a site and locate information quickly is also essential.  Projecting an appropriate image with an attractive site will make people feel confident about the business it represents.  In today's market, the Web site is often that important first impression to a potential customer.

Now that I am designing sites for small businesses, I am also gaining valuable feedback from my clients and their customers.  I am using this information  to constantly improve the functionality and marketability of the sites I design and maintain.   My research skills help me learn more about my clients' competitors and how they market their products or services.
